This story is told through the view of Dave Pelzer as a child being abused by his mother. Dave's father did all he could to help Dave, but never succeeded because of his mother's abusive behavior. Dave’s mother suffered from alcoholism, which made the abuse worse. Dave talked about his life and how he had to sleep on the kitchen floor with newspaper as his blanket, and eventually he was moved out the garage with a cot and newspaper to keep him warm. He was only allowed to eat very seldom, and sometimes he would sneak food out of the trash can. Dave would also ask strangers on his way to school if they saw a lunch box that he lost, and the people would give him food on the way to school. Dave would then eat the food he received from the strangers on his way to school in the mornings. Dave's morning snacks ended when he accidentally went to one of his mother's friend's houses, and Dave's mom's friend told his mom what was happening. Dave survived the physical and emotion abuse he received from his mother.
