Dave
Dave was never allowed to play outside or inside with his brothers or anyone on the street where they lived. Dave was forced to be inside; the only place he was allowed to go was school. He longed to play outside with the other children. "Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun; not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul." When Dave was beaten he never thought about running away or killing himself, he wanted to prove he was stronger than his mom, and in the end he would win. When he was being beaten he would talk to himself to be strong. “Even in its darkest passages, the heart is unconquerable. It is important that the body survives, but it is more meaningful that the human spirit prevails.” Dave believed that no matter what your past was, you can make your future brighter. Dave always knew that people were watching out for him, and someday he would be free. “It is important for people to know that no matter what lies in their past, they can overcome the dark side and press on the a brighter world.”
Mother
Dave's mom continually beats Dave no matter what he does."Now it's time I showed you what hell is like!" Even through the rough life he lived he strived to do well in school, it was his place of peace. "Well, Mr. Ziegler says I should be proud of you for naming the school newspaper. He also claims that you are one of the top pupils in his class. Well, aren't you special?" Her voice turned ice cold, and she jabbed her finger at my face and hissed, "Get one thing straight, you little son of a bitch! There is nothing you can do to impress me! Do you understand me? You are a nobody! An It! You are nonexistent! You are a bustard child! I have you and I wish you were dead! Dead! Do you hear me? Dead!" Dave's mom always yelled at him even if he did something good, she belittled him to make him know that he was not important to her. Depending on the day and her attitude would depend if Dave was allowed to eat, but it was with fear because if he did not finish his meal in the time that she allowed he would get beaten or stabbed. "If you don't finish on time, I'm going to kill you!"
Dad
Dave's dad did not stay around the house because he could not handle the way that she treated Dave. Dave always loved it when his dad was at the house because his mom would not beat him. When Dave's dad visited he would try to help Dave get some food. "Well, Roerva, if you would just let The Boy have something to eat." Dave's dad would try to convince Dave's mom to get Dave some food, but he always lost. When Dave's dad would return he did not need to use words, Dave knew what the answer was by the look on his dad's face. "Wait here, Tiger. I'll see what I can do." His Dad grew weak over time and he wanted to help Dave and him escape the madhouse they lived in. "Some day you and I will both get out of this madhouse." The someday did come a couple of years later and Dave was placed in a foster home.
